What Your Lawn Needs to survive northern colorado
Northern Colorado’s dry climate and variable seasons mean your lawn needs consistent, thoughtful care. Here’s what to focus on.
π§ Watering
Proper watering is the single most important step in establishing your new sod. Begin watering immediately after installation. During the first week, apply enough water to saturate the top 4 to 6 inches of soil β approximately 1/2 inch of water per day over 2 to 3 watering periods.
During week two, reduce to 1/4 inch per day. After the first two weeks you can transition to a normal watering schedule.
Edges, sod ends, and borders dry out first β apply water to those areas directly from a hose until established. An efficient water program is the key to a beautiful, healthy lawn in Colorado’s dry climate.
Watering Recommendations:
March through May: water 3 times per week for 15 to 20 minutes. Starting in June you may need to increase to 4 times per week. Adjust your schedule based on weather and temperature.
π± Fertilization
Our turf is grown and properly maintained before arriving to you, but once the sod is established it needs to be fed. We recommend fertilizing 3 times per year with a balanced fertilizer (24-6-12-6.5Fe).
Suggested dates: April 1st, June 15th, and September 1st. If you choose to fertilize only once, feed in the fall. If twice, fertilize in spring and fall. For a consistently green lawn through the fall, fertilize four times per year β early spring, late spring, late summer, and mid-fall.
π Mowing
You can begin mowing your new lawn anywhere from two to three weeks after installation. Always make sure your mower blades are sharp β your sod was trimmed before delivery so by the time it needs to be mowed it should be safe to do so.
Never remove more than one third of the blade height at one time. Removing more can cause shock, an unsightly appearance, or make your lawn more susceptible to disease. Keep your mowing height between 2 and 3 inches.
πΏ Aeration
In the Rocky Mountain region most lawns are made up of cool season grasses like Kentucky Bluegrass and Fescue. It is best to aerate in the spring and early September, or both, to help reduce thatch and soil compaction. Regular aeration keeps your lawn breathing and promotes deeper root growth.
